Mozilla is one of the few companies that continues to support Windows XP with its browser being part of Firefox 52 ESR (Extended Support Release).
Unfortunately, however, the company recently announced that both Windows XP and Windows Vista are expected to lose Firefox support in June 2018 and recommends that users upgrade to a newer version of Windows before that deadline.
With ESR support, Firefox only receives security updates for Windows XP and Vista and none of the new features available for more recent versions of the browser.
Windows XP users can browse the site safely even though their operating system is not receiving any additional updates. The same applies to Internet Explorer, which is not receiving any updates for XP.
"June 2018 is the last month of Firefox support on Windows XP and Vista, so those of you using those platforms will receive security updates until that date," a Mozilla spokesperson said.
In other news, Windows XP still has a 5% market share and statistics reveal a slow decline, despite the lack of security updates. It stopped being supported in April 2014 and has only received one patch this year due to the WannaCry attack.
Windows XP is mainly used by companies and organizations that have implemented security systems that limit internet and internal network connections. Of course, this does not mean that the systems are hacker-proof, so upgrading to supported Windows is still the safest solution.
