Tesla has unveiled Tesla Home, an energy management platform for the home, powered by an artificial intelligence engine called Opticaster. This engine makes “hundreds of decisions” every day about when to store and use electricity with the goal of reducing your bill.

According to Tesla's support page, Tesla Home "monitors your home's battery, solar panels, Wall Connector, and smart switches to optimize your home's electricity consumption and increase your energy savings." It's available with every Powerwall with no additional hardware required for existing owners.
The platform integrates Tesla’s products — Powerwall , solar panels, Solar Roof , Wall Connector and Eaton’s AbleEdge smart switches — allowing homeowners to choose a goal. The “ Savings ” option minimizes utility bills, while “ Self-Powering ” prioritizes using stored solar energy after dark.
Tesla describes four functions: goal setting, optimization, control, and visibility. Through the Tesla app, owners can see every decision the system makes and the reasoning behind those choices.
Opticaster, which is described as “the AI engine for smart energy management that runs in every Powerwall,” predicts solar generation and home loads, then creates a personalized dispatch strategy based on the homeowner’s goal.

Opticaster is not a new product. It has been optimizing batteries in the field for years. Tesla says Opticaster “has accumulated over one hundred million hours of operational experience, delivering tens of millions of dollars in operational savings and network service revenue to thousands of Tesla customers worldwide.” It supports Tesla’s large-scale deployments and virtual power plants, which paid Powerwall owners nearly $10 million in 2024.
Tesla Home is primarily a consumer-facing name and interface based on software that has been in use for years. The major change is in the Tesla app, version 4.58.6, which consolidates energy controls into a single “Home Controls” menu and reorganizes settings into Home Settings, Your Products , and Site Configuration.
The update also introduces smart switch integration, allowing owners to control individual circuits during an outage, and a “Home Status” feature that uses AI to summarize system activity. Pricing plan-based charging, which times EV charging to the cheapest hours, works when a Powerwall is paired with a Gen 3 or Universal Wall Connector.
Existing customers don't need new hardware. This is a reimagining and unifying of the experience of using features Tesla has already released. Tesla Home brings together several products with a reimagining and cleanup of the UI, but it's not a new product.

Opticaster is effective software, and Tesla's decision to provide homeowners with a single, goal-based dashboard is a much-needed step forward in the home energy space. The question remains whether Opticaster can deliver the same benefits for homeowners as it does for Tesla's commercial fleet of stationary energy storage.
