Tesla is expanding the family of its most popular electric SUV, officially introducing the new Model Y L in the United States and Puerto Rico. It is a significantly upgraded version of the well-known Model Y, which features a longer wheelbase, three rows of seats and a six-seat configuration , aimed mainly at families and buyers looking for more space without moving to larger and more expensive models.

Orders are already open through the company's official website, with Tesla initially offering the vehicle exclusively in the "Launch Series" version. The starting price is set at $61,990, placing the new model in the premium category of electric SUVs with three rows of seats.
Larger dimensions for more comfort
The most significant change concerns the body. The Model YL gains a wheelbase lengthened by 150 millimeters, which now reaches 3,040 millimeters, while the overall length increases by approximately 18 centimeters compared to the conventional ModelY.

This extra dimension isn't just for aesthetic reasons. It allows Tesla to incorporate a truly functional third row of seats, offering more comfort for both passengers and luggage. Unlike the optional seven-seat layout that was offered in the past and was criticized for its limited space, the new design places more emphasis on practicality.
Premium cabin with six independent seats
Tesla opted for a 2+2+2 layout instead of seven seats, adopting two independent captain's chairs in the second row. This choice significantly improves the comfort of rear passengers and facilitates access to the third row.
The second row seats are heated, ventilated, electrically adjustable and have armrests, and can be folded electrically via a dedicated switch. The third row is equipped with heated seats, electrically adjustable backrests and ISOFIX child seat mounts, making the vehicle more family-friendly.
At the same time, the overall ride quality is upgraded through improved sound insulation and new glass that reduces cabin noise even at high speeds.

Powerful performance without compromise
Despite its larger dimensions, the Model YL remains remarkably fast. Tesla claims a 0-60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds, making it one of the fastest electric family SUVs on the market.
The range reaches 325 miles according to the EPA standard, allowing comfortable long-distance travel without frequent stops for charging. At the same time, the adaptive suspension and different-sized front and rear wheels promise better driving behavior and higher levels of comfort.

The equipment also includes a 19-speaker audio system, a second 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers, 50W wireless charging with a cooling system, as well as FSD Supervised with built-in artificial intelligence capabilities via the Grok AI.
The price is debatable
While the new model brings significant improvements, its price is perhaps the most talked-about element of the presentation. Analysts estimated that the base version would cost around $54,000, following the corresponding pricing policy implemented in China.
Tesla, however, has chosen to start exclusively with the more expensive Launch Series version, raising the price to almost $62,000. This amount exceeds both the Model Y Performance and the basic rear-wheel drive Model Y, following a strategy that the company has implemented in previous releases: first the most expensive and complete versions are available, and then cheaper options are added.
Whether lower-cost versions will follow will play a decisive role in the model's commercial success.

Faced with strong competition
The three-row electric SUV market is now evolving into one of the most competitive segments in the automotive industry. Manufacturers such as Kia and Hyundai have already presented particularly noteworthy proposals, offering large spaces, high autonomy and competitive prices.

The new Model YL attempts to differentiate itself through top-notch performance, advanced software, access to the Supercharger network and Tesla’s highly evolved ecosystem. At the same time, the six-seat layout is a substantial solution for those who until now believed that the third row of the conventional Model Y could not meet the needs of a family.
With the Model YL, Tesla fills a significant gap in its lineup and is aggressively seeking market share in a segment that is expected to see significant growth in the coming years. The model's ultimate trajectory will depend not only on its performance and equipment, but also on whether the company will soon launch more affordable versions that will make it competitive with other offerings on the market.
