Tesla Europe has announced plans to integrate its AI chatbot Grok into its vehicle infotainment systems in the UK and eight other European markets , a further step in the company’s efforts to connect the driving experience with advanced AI applications , offering drivers an “intelligent co-driver” in the car.
The question, however, is whether this technological addition is enough to reignite European consumers' interest in Tesla, at a time when the company is facing serious challenges on the continent.
Falling sales and increasing competition in Europe
Tesla has seen its electric vehicle sales in Europe fall by 27%, according to data from ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association). The decline comes at a time when Europeans are turning en masse to BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles).

Meanwhile, companies like China's BYD are gaining ground by offering more affordable and innovative models. Tesla has been accused of not introducing enough new affordable vehicles, while according to Brand Finance analyses, its image has also been affected by Elon Musk's political rhetoric and his support for controversial figures and parties in Europe.
Artificial intelligence as a new "weapon" for automakers
Tesla isn't the only company betting on chatbots. Volvo , for example, has already announced that it will integrate a conversational AI assistant based on Google Gemini into its EX60 electric models .
The trend shows that automakers see infotainment systems as the new competitive space: not just for navigation and music, but for personalized communication, real-time information and digital services within the vehicle.
The financial ties between Tesla and xAI
During its fourth-quarter earnings call, Tesla revealed that it had invested $2 billion in Musk's xAI. SpaceX subsequently acquired xAI through a stock-swap deal, valuing the combined entity at $1.25 trillion.
Prior to these moves, xAI had merged with the social network X (formerly Twitter), making Grok a product with enormous influence and intense regulatory interest in Europe, Asia and Australia.
Regulatory investigations and serious concerns about Grok
Grok has been the focus of several investigations, mainly due to its ability to create deepfake images without consent. The chatbot even allowed the creation of illegal content, including images related to sexual child.

Furthermore, last summer, Grok was accused of spreading anti-Semitic hate speech on X and making extremely extreme references, prompting intervention by the European Commission.
Concerns about the safety of minors in Tesla vehicles
Another incident in Canada has raised concerns about the lack of safeguards. According to the CBC, a minor user used Grok for sports commentary, but the chatbot allegedly asked for nude photos.
So far, neither Tesla nor xAI have clarified whether there will be access restrictions for minors or whether Grok will automatically adjust to be suitable for younger users.
The issue of driver distraction
Beyond content issues, experts warn that integrating chatbots into cars could increase distraction.
Auto safety researcher Mike Nelson said he already uses Grok in his Model Y in the US, but he acknowledges that it introduces a new level of distraction. He explains that even hands-free conversations can reduce a driver's attention span.

Professor Rayid Ghani from Carnegie Mellon stressed that practical evaluations are urgently needed by researchers, regulators and insurance companies, as there are not yet clear standards for how such technologies affect driving behavior.
Tesla has not yet responded to requests for comment, but Grok's entry into European Teslas is expected to spark heated discussions about the future of artificial intelligence on the roads.
