Tesla: New four-wheel drive version of Model Y in the US from $41,990

Tesla continues to reshape its strategy in the electric vehicle market, introducing a new all-wheel drive (AWD) version of its most popular SUV, the Model Y, in the United States. According to the company's official website, the new version is priced at $41,990 and is positioned commercially between the company's most affordable and premium options.

This move is not just an addition of equipment, but is part of a broader plan to restructure Tesla's pricing policy, at a time when the global electric vehicle market is facing clear signs of slowdown.

Above the basic version, below the premium ones

The new AWD version of the Model Y sits above the base “Standard” rear-wheel drive, offering better traction, increased stability and improved performance, elements that remain critical for buyers in areas with difficult weather conditions.

In this way, Tesla attempts to fill the gap between the affordable entry into its ecosystem and the more expensive Long Range or Performance versions, maintaining the attractiveness of the Model Y, which continues to be one of the best-selling electric SUVs in the world.

“Standard” versions as a survival weapon

The launch of the new version comes just months after the introduction of the lower-end “Standard” versions of the Model Y and Model 3in October. These models cost about $5,000 less than the previous base versions and are a central pillar of Tesla’s 2026 strategy.

The company's goal is to reduce the cost of entry into electric mobility, attracting buyers who prioritize price and not necessarily acquiring a completely new mass-produced, which remains uncertain in terms of timing.

The removal of incentives and the role of prices

In the US, the “Standard” versions bring final prices closer to the levels prevailing before the federal tax incentives, which reached $7,500. The elimination of these subsidies by the Trump administration in September caused an immediate “freeze” in demand, increasing the real cost to the consumer.

Internationally, the price reduction is even more noticeable, reaching $5,000, with the clear aim of stimulating demand in markets where competition from Chinese and European companies is becoming increasingly intense.

Pressure on the margins and a shift to the future

Analysts warn that the increasing share of cheaper models in the overall sales mix could squeeze Tesla's profit margins. The company is being called upon to offset this pressure through lower production costs, automation and boosting revenue from software, subscriptions and services.

Elon Musk

At the same time, Elon Musk revealed that Tesla plans to end production of the Model S and Model X, using available space at its California factory to develop humanoid robots. The statement underscores the company's shift from the traditional automotive industry to a broader technology ecosystem, where artificial intelligence and robotics play a leading role.

Tesla, once again, shows that it is not just investing in new models, but in a total repositioning of its own vision.
