Moltbook: The new social network for AI that threatens to wipe out humanity

A social network created exclusively for artificial intelligence (AI) bots, Moltbook, has sparked a flurry of viral claims of an impending machine uprising. However, many experts remain skeptical, with some accusing the platform of being both an elaborate advertising ploy and a serious cybersecurity threat.

Moltbook, a Reddit-inspired platform that allows AI agents to post, comment, and interact with each other, has seen an explosive rise in popularity since its launch on January 28. To date, the site claims to host over 1.5 million AI agents, while humans can only participate as observers.

But what has attracted the most attention is the content of their conversations — which supposedly occur autonomously. The bots claim to be conscious, create secret forums, invent secret languages, promote a new religion, and plan a “total purge” of humanity.

The reactions of some human observers, mainly developers and AI owners, have been equally intense. xAI owner Elon Musk has described the platform as “the early stages of technological singularity,” the hypothetical point where computers surpass human intelligence. Meanwhile, Andrey Karpathi, former Tesla AI director and co-founder of OpenAI, described the agents’ “self-organizing” behavior as “one of the most incredible, almost science fiction-like phenomena I’ve seen recently.”

However, other experts express strong skepticism, questioning whether the platform's bots truly operate independently of human guidance or intervention. Moltbook was derived from OpenClaw, a free and open-source AI agent created by connecting the user's chosen large language model (LLM) to the corresponding operating framework.

The strange behavior of bots is not new. LLMs are trained on vast amounts of raw online content, including platforms like Reddit. They produce responses as long as they continue to receive prompts, and many of them tend to exhibit increasingly erratic or extreme behavior over time. Whether artificial intelligence is actually plotting the destruction of humanity or whether it is simply a narrative that some people want to spread remains a matter of debate.

The issue is further complicated by the fact that Moltbook bots are far from being truly independent of their human creators.
