The first mass-produced 900V EV drive system went on sale on Wednesday. Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO’s (NIO ) “Thunder” 900V electric drive system (EDS) can add more than 150 miles (255 km) of range on a five-minute charge.

NIO announced the milestone on Wednesday, after building its 1 millionth EDS. NIO's advanced electric car, the ET9 , which competes with Porsche , will be the first to feature the new 900V EV drive system.
The ET9 was launched in December and is aimed at “new high-end business users.” NIO has integrated its latest technology into its luxury electric vehicle for a “perfect package with innovative exterior styling, spacious interior, excellent experience, efficient recharging.”
This includes the world's first mass-produced 900V EV drive system, with up to 925V, 600kW peak power and 765A peak charging.
NIO claims that the electric motors in the front and rear are smaller and 30% lighter to improve efficiency. At the same time, the smaller units provide more interior space.

The ET9 will be the first to use a synchronous permanent magnet W-Pin 925V (peak power 340 kW). Weighing just 79 kg, the unit delivers a power density of 4.3 kW/kg, which NIO claims is the highest among asynchronous shunt-wound EV motors. The front motor has a peak power of 180 kW with a power density of 2.6 kW/kg.
NIO's new EDS also features a 1200V silicon power standard with a power density of 1315 kW/L . It can withstand over 300,000 power cycles . The 900V EV drive system also features a liquid cooling system that increases the maximum continuous power of the motor by 20% .
NIO says the ET9 can be charged in three minutes via a battery swap or add 255 km with a five-minute charge. Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
The news comes as Chinese competitor IM Motors revealed that its new L6 EV will also use a 900V platform. According to IM Motors, it will feature batteries with a range of over 1,000 km.
