Summer is for many their favorite season: travel, beaches, sun, sea and relaxation. However, for our portable devices – and especially for smartphones – the same conditions can prove disastrous. Excessive heat, humidity and contact with water or sand can cause serious problems for smartphones, from reduced performance to permanent damage.
Here's a complete guide on how to protect your smartphone this summer.

1. Beware of overheating
Most smartphones operate normally in temperatures between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. When the thermometer hits the red, the phone can overheat, with consequences such as:
- reduction in processor performance,
- battery wear,
- deformation of the screen or casing,
- even automatic shutdown for protection.
What to do:
- Don't leave your phone exposed to the sun (especially in a car).
- Remove the case when charging or when it gets hot.
- Avoid heavy applications (e.g. gaming, navigation) for long periods of time under the sun.
- Place the phone in a shady place or near metal surfaces for better cooling.
2. Invisible enemy: humidity
Moisture is perhaps the most insidious enemy of electronics, as it can penetrate without being noticed and cause corrosion to internal circuits.
What to watch out for:
- Do not use your phone at the beach or in the pool without a case with IP68 certification or higher.
- Avoid taking it with you into the bathroom with running water or steam.
- If you sweat heavily (e.g. while hiking), avoid having it stuck to your body without protection.

3. Sand & salt: small grains, big problems
Sand can get into charging ports, speakers, and microphones, causing mechanical problems or blockages. Sea salt can corrode ports and buttons.
How to protect yourself:
- Invest in waterproof and durable cases (ideally with port covers).
- Use transparent touch pouches that allow screen use but protect against water/sand.
- Clean the device with a damp cloth after spending time at the beach or near the sea.
4. Charge with care
Heat and cheap chargers can cause your smartphone to overcharge or malfunction. Especially in the summer, choose:
- Certified chargers (ideally from the manufacturer).
- Short-term charging when the phone is hot.
- Power banks with built-in temperature safety mechanism.

Extra Tip: Travel and connectivity
Don't forget to:
- You make a backup before the holidays.
- Enable VPN connections if you use public Wi-Fi.
- You have a tracking device or “Find My Phone” function with you in case of loss
Your smartphone is more than just a communication tool – it’s your camera, your map, your assistant, and your summer organizer. By protecting your smartphone from heat, humidity, and misuse, you’re not only protecting your device, but also your peace of mind.
Happy and safe tech-holidays!
