Reddit has overtaken X to become the fifth most popular social networking platform in the UK, according to a new report.

Reddit is a well-known American site, a kind of discussion forum , where people gather and can talk about anything. There, one can find discussions on any topic, from news to cooking and fashion.
Ofcom said 22.9 million adults in the UK visited Reddit in May this year, while the corresponding figure for X was 22.1 million.

According to Ofcom data, Reddit is the fastest growing major social media in the country (up 47% year-on-year in 2023). Thanks to this growth, Reddit has managed to overtake both LinkedIn and X to become the fifth most popular platform. YouTube, having overtaken Facebook.
Reddit's growth is also largely due to updates to Google's search engine. Farhad Divecha, CEO of digital marketing firm AccuraCast, said: "Google's last algorithm update, in the first half of 2024, gave Reddit a big boost in organic search traffic. I think that probably contributed a lot."

Ofcom also speculated that the rise may have been caused by changes to the way third-party apps accessed the platform's content, forcing users of those apps to go to Reddit's website.

However, there is another important factor. X’s popularity has fallen by 8% since May of last year. X has been criticized for its content moderation standards and increased hate speech since its acquisition by Elon Musk in 2022. In addition, Meta’s Threads appeared in July 2023 to compete with X.
Whatever the reasons Reddit has overtaken X in the UK, one thing is certain. User behaviours and interests are constantly changing. As competition between social media intensifies, we can expect changes and new features as companies try to outdo each other.
