Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Releases Everywhere in 2025

Hello Kitty Island Adventure

Hello Kitty Island Adventure is expanding from Apple Arcade to all modern platforms except Xbox next year. It's coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5 , and PC.

Next year, Sanrio's beloved characters will be taking you beyond your iPhones and iPads. Hello Kitty Island Adventure, the relaxing community game that debuted in July 2023 on Apple Arcade, is finally expanding in 2025 to Nintendo Switch and PC as a timed exclusive before launching on PS4 and PS5.

Notably, it's the Xbox. But even the release of the game beyond Apple Arcade is a welcome change for Sanrio fans outside the Apple ecosystem. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is the kind of relaxing, low-risk browsing experience on a calm island doing fun tasks that fits well with Sanrio's beloved characters.

Fans continue to play the game, with over 40,000 people on its official Discord, said Chelsea Howe, product director at Sunblink. She believes in the characters and the uniqueness of the game — which allows you to create your own Sanrio‑style character, wander through dynamically different areas, decorate your home, build and create — for its popularity.

“I think we always get an initial surprise [about the game]. If they’re a Sanrio fan, they’ve never seen a game like this before,” Howe said. “They’ve never seen an opportunity where they can really get to know the characters and connect with the characters, experience the backstory of the characters.”

Sunblink has also kept fans happy with regular content expansions. Hello Kitty Island Adventure was released with over 30 hours of content for players, and the Sunblink studio has kept fans engaged by adding content on a regular basis — updates every three weeks, new features in a major update every six weeks — which has increased the game to about 80 hours now.

At first glance, Hello Kitty Island Adventure looks a lot like the king of casual games that preceded it, Animal Crossing New Horizons. The games share a similar island setting and community. But Hello Kitty Island Adventure has distinctive elements that will surprise fans, Howe says, such as the open world. There are biomes and island features like ruins to explore, containing underground rooms of puzzles and logic. And instead of paying off a debt to a suspicious raccoon landlord, the main mechanic is to level up your friendships with Hello Kitty, Chococat, Cinnamoroll, and other Sanrio characters.

“It was really important to us to intentionally combine the open world elements with the relaxed life simulation elements and continue to walk that line despite the comparisons to Animal Crossing,” Howe said.

Another method that differs from Animal Crossing New Horizons: You should not have to tamper with your console's clock to trick the game into thinking it's earlier or later, something fans called “time travel”.

“Don’t do it. You did it in Animal Crossing. Don’t do it in this game,” Howe laughs. That’s not a promise of punishment — if you time travel, you’ll miss out on real-time events, potentially locking you out of new content. Yes, the same content that Sunblink adds every few weeks.

This includes in-game events tied to holidays, such as Valentine's Day, which all players will experience simultaneously. Now that the game is coming to other platforms beyond Apple's devices, Sunblink faces the additional challenge of updating multiple platforms at once. It will do this by releasing Apple Arcade version updates at the same pace, while bundling several into larger updates for consoles and PC.

Howe says Sunblink listens to its fans and has added features or made changes based on what they’ve suggested. Sometimes that means introducing features that are similar to those in Animal Crossing, and other times it’s removing annoying features. For example, the game doesn’t have inventory limits: “That was the number one thing that was a huge disappointment for me personally in Animal Crossing and for a lot of other people,” Howe said.

Another added feature is the ability to edit your character’s island cabin, which is TikTok-friendly. If friends are watching, they can send emojis and provide other live feedback as you decorate. “If one of your high-level motivations is self-expression, and if you want it to be a social experience, the more you can allow for collaborative self-expression, the better,” Howe said.

All of this non-competitive, friendly, and caring-focused gameplay is coming to consoles and PC for an undisclosed price, but Sunblink has retained another feature from Apple Arcade: no microtransactions. Instead, there’s a mix of free and paid updates, which Sunblink believes will resonate better with its fan base. “It’s definitely all about making sure it feels like it’s worth the value you’re providing,” Howe said.

Fans of casual games will have another option when Hello Kitty Island Adventure arrives on multiple platforms over time, and Howe emphasized that players will dictate how long the game will continue.

“We see this as the beginning, not the end. This is a living game. We have at least two years of planning ahead of us,” Howe said. “As long as people enjoy it, love it and play it, we plan to continue to maintain it.”
