Microsoft has officially confirmed the release of a new entry in the Gears series, and it goes back in time.
Gears E-Day, as it's called, will be coming to Xbox and PC in the future. Of all the big reveals at Xbox Games Showcase 2024, this was probably the biggest, and Xbox saved it for last.
The announcement is good news for fans who have been wanting to see the series continue, even if it may go in the opposite direction in time compared to what fans expected. The cinematic trailer shows a young Marcus Fenix facing off against a single Locust, something he doesn't feature in the later games–but this is a more inexperienced Marcus.

In the end, he overcomes the difficulties thanks to his best friend, Dom, before the two of them look towards the horizon and see all hell break loose during Emergence Day, or the day the Locust emerged from beneath the planet and began the war with humanity.
The studio said that E-Day has long been “the heart of the Gears universe,” and so, in building for the future, it looked to Gears’ past. The game takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War story. That also means some of the weapons will be references to earlier versions of the literature, such as a Lancer without the iconic chainsaw that is instead equipped with a knife. However, the game is a “multi-origin story,” the studio indicated, so it looks like we’ll see the birth of Lancer with the chainsaw during the campaign.

The game also references the old days with a little nod to the cover of Gary Jules' Mad World, a song that has long been associated with Gears of War ever since a memorable trailer featured the song over 15 years ago.
The series, which has always been closely tied to the Unreal Engine, will of course be built on Unreal Engine 5.There is no release date for the game yet.
