Kia Corp. has unveiled EV (electric) vehicles as it prepares a range of cheaper models aimed at budget-conscious drivers.

Kia has unveiled its new EV5 at an event for Electric Vehicle Day. This eco-friendly car is designed specifically for millennial families and promises impressive range. In the Chinese market, the standard model has a 64 kWh battery that offers a range of 530 km, while the high-performance model has an 88 kWh battery and a range of 720 km. The Korean versions will have slightly smaller batteries, depending on the needs of the market. This innovative approach from Kia promises an exciting driving experience with cars that respect the environment.

The EV5 features two screens, a 12.3-inch (31 cm) instrument display and infotainment, and a 5-inch climate control screen. In the version , a front bench is included, while the rear seat can be folded to create a bed. Additionally, a 4-liter (1.1-gallon) refrigerator and a heating unit for storing food and drinks are included. The cars will be built in factories in China and Korea, with production starting around 2025.

Kia also showed off two concept cars: the EV3, a compact version of its flagship EV9, and the EV4, a four-door sedan with sporty features. All of these models are part of Kia's plan to offer smaller electric cars priced between $35,000 and $50,000 to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. The company said the most advanced models will cost up to $80,000.

Kia last month introduced its most affordable EV vehicle, the single-seater Ray, which starts at $20,000 and is only available in Korea.

Tesla Inc. began selling its China-made Model Y electric SUV in Korea earlier this year with a starting price of about 57 million won ($42,550). With government subsidies, the price drops to about $37,000 in Seoul and $30,000 in some cities that offer additional incentives for electric vehicles.

The smaller EVs are Kia’s entry into the segment of customers looking for affordable electric cars with low price and easy charging. CEOHo Sung Song told reporters at an event in Yeoju city, southeast of Seoul. The automaker aims to sell 1.6 million electric vehicles by 2030.

To achieve this goal, Kia plans to have eight production facilities by 2025. In Europe, the company will focus on building small and mid-size electric vehicles, while it will produce mid-size and large vehicles in China. In India, it will focus on “strategically designed EV models tailored to emerging markets,” Mr. Song said, without providing further details.

Kia will have to look very carefully at how to further reduce the price of EVs, he said. “This is particularly important for us. How can we bring vehicles to market for $25,000? In the future, we will need to implement various sales strategies that will improve efficiency, such as selling vehicles without a battery. This way, buyers will have the option to lease cars and reduce the need to buy.

Battery prices, the most expensive part of an EV, are expected to fall to $99 per kWh by 2025 as technology improves and new lithium reserves are developed, according to an Oct. 4 report by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analysts led by Kota Yuzawa.

Kia EV

Kia and its Hyundai Motor Co. sold about 374,000 EVs in the first eight months of 2023, ranking seventh globally, according to a report by SNE Research. Their combined market share of the global electric vehicle market, including electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, fell to 4.3 percent this year from 5.4 percent in 2022, the research group said. That’s due to strong growth by China’s BYD Co. Mr. Song said Kia may introduce a new model in Europe called the EV2. The European Union is investigating China ’s subsidies for EVs. That could lead to tariffs on cars made in China, potentially favoring the Korean company.
