After years of neglect, home screen widgets have finally received a major upgrade in Android 12. The new widgets follow the Material You guidelines and are more useful and interactive. Many popular Google apps, including Gmail, YouTube Music, Google Drive, and Maps, have already received revamped home screen widgets. Now, another Google app is getting a new widget: Google Translate.

Previously, Google Translate for Android offered a 1×1 home screen shortcut that allowed you to quickly create a specific language pair. The new widget consists of two rows and is similar in style to Google Maps.

Google notes the current translation pairing at the top, and tapping it opens the app directly. This is followed by shortcuts for voice input , chat , transcription , or camera mode . What appears in the bottom row varies by language.

The widget adopts the Dynamic Color theme and is convenient for “heavy users” of the app. It follows the wonderful redesign of the Translate app last year, which led to one of Google’s most beautiful Material You updates

With version 6.34, the Google Translate Android widget doesn't appear to be widely available . It could appear in the next version of the app, and a server -side component isn't out of the question . Google's tweet this morning didn't provide any details. Availability will likely require Android 12 and up.

The pace of new Android widgets and/or Material You redesigns is definitely slowing down, as Google has mostly covered biggest apps since the launch of Android 12 and the Pixel 6 last year.
