Google Translate is a very useful application that is not limited to translating text on websites and documents. Google Translate can also be used for audio translation . See below how you can do this on your desktop and mobile phone .
However, it’s worth noting that you can’t translate recorded audio files with Google Translate. You have to play files while Google Translate “listens” to translate your content from the “source language” to the selected “target language.”

Audio/voice translation with Google Translate on desktop
- If you're using a Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook, you'll first need to open your browser and then visit the Google Translate site. You don't need to log in to the site to access it.
- When the site opens , select the source language (the language to be translated ) in the box on the left. This is the language your audio is in.
- In the box on the right, select the into translate your audio
- After selecting both languages, click the microphone icon on the screen. If the browser asks to access your computer 's microphone , grant it permission.
- Speak into your computer's microphone and Google Translate will translate the audio and display the result on screen . To play the translated version, click the audio icon.
If you want to translate an audio file stored on computer , play that file after clicking the microphone icon on the Google Translate site. Make sure the volume of the file is loud enough to be heard through the microphone.

Audio/voice translation with Google Translate on mobile phones
To translate voice using Android, iPhone or iPad you must have the free Google Translate app installed on your device.
- In the lower left corner of the app, tap the language that appears.
- From the “ Translate from ” menu, select the language your original audio is in .
- Tap the language on the right and select the language you want the audio to be translated into
- After selecting both languages, at the bottom of the app, tap the microphone. If the app asks to access your phone's microphone, allow it to do so.
- Speak into your phone's microphone and the app will translate your speech in real time.
- You can listen to the translated content by tapping the audio icon.
If you want to translate an audio file that you have saved on device , transfer this file to another device and press play with the microphone enabled in the Google Translate app on your device.

In case you want to translate a conversation in real time into two different languages, you can go to the bottom of the app, and tap on the “Chat” option. On the next page, both you and your interlocutor can speak to have your conversations translated.
The ability to translate voice and audio files is very useful and as you have seen, you can use it very easily in both the desktop and mobile versions of Google Translate.
