Wikipedia itsknowledge base is available to all users around the world, it needs to provide it in languages other than English. To that end, the Wikimedia Foundation has announced that Google Translate will be available to Wikipedia editors.
Wikipedia already uses several other machine translation systems, such as Apertium and Youdao. The addition of Google Translate gives Wikipedia article editors 15 additional languages to work on, bringing the total to 121 languages.
To be clear, articles are not translated directly from one language to another. Machine translation – including Google Translate – performs an initial translation of an article. Editors then review and improve that article before its final publication.
Before adding Google Translate, Wikipedia had already translated nearly 400,000 articles with its content translation tool. The addition of what it calls “one of the most advanced machine translation systems available today” will likely help increase that number.
