Ruth Hamilton was sleeping at her home in British Columbia when she woke up to the sound of her dog's barking and followed «explosion». She jumped out of bed, turned on the light and all she saw was a hole in the ceiling. Her clock read 11:35 p.m.

At first, Hamilton thought that a tree had fallen on her house. But no, all the trees were there. She called 911 and, while she was talking on the phone, she noticed a large gray coal-like object between the two flowered pillows of hers.

«Oh, my God», she remembers saying to the person she was talking to on the phone, «there is a rock in my bed».

It was a meteorite, she learned later.

The 6-pound rock the size of a large man’s fist had landed near Hamilton’s head, leaving “drywall debris all over her face.” The night of October 3 left her shaken, but it captivated the internet and gave scientists an unusual opportunity to study a space rock that had hit Earth.

«It just seems surreal», said Hamilton in his interview on Wednesday. «Then I look around the room and, yes, there's still a hole in my ceiling. Yes, that happened».

Meteoroids are launched toward Earth every hour every day. When they are large enough, they survive the journey through Earth's atmosphere and land, becoming meteorites. People collect them. Others end up in museums. Some are sold on eBay. In February, Christie’s held an auction of rare meteorites that broke the record, with more than 4 million dollars.

Meteorite

On the night the meteor fell onto Hamilton's bed in Golden, a town of about 3,700 residents 440 miles east of Vancouver, other Canadians heard two loud explosions and saw a bullet streak across the sky. Some recorded the phenomenon on video, according to researchers at the University of Calgary.

After Hamilton called 911, an officer who entered her house made a guess about what it all was, saying: «I think you have a meteor in your bed».

Hamilton didn't sleep the rest of the night, she said, and sat in a chair, drinking tea while the meteorite sat on her bed. Hamilton told local news agencies that she kept the news to herself at first, but later reported the incident to researchers at the University of Western Ontario, where Peter Brown, a professor there, confirmed that the rock was a meteorite «from asteroids».

Naturally this is not the first time a meteorite lands in houses or people's yards. The odds of a meteorite falling into someone's house and landing on a bed in any given year are about 1 in 100 billion, said Brown.
