Data breach at the sheriff's office in Hennepin

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office suffered a data breach , which resulted in the leakage of information on approximately 1,400 people.

In June, Netsential notified officials that information from the Sheriff’s Office had been leaked due to a breach on server . Netsential is a Houston-based company that provides web hosting services to hundreds of law enforcement and government agencies. The breach impacted more than 200 police departments, information centers and other law enforcement agencies across the United States.

The most common documents shared by the Sheriff's Office via the Web are criminal intelligence bulletins and general updates from federal, state, and local law enforcement officials that include the full names and dates of birth of individuals who are under investigation, wanted by authorities , or have active warrants outstanding.

Since the breach was first reported, the Sheriff's Office has determined that the data of at least 1,400 people was compromised. The FBI Houston Office is further investigating the extent of the breach.

Netsential has modernized its core storage platform and improved database security by creating strong passwords for each database. It has also begun to increase data encryption awareness and is planning additional security upgrades

Andy Skoogman, a spokesman for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, said the county has prepared a violation report, as required by state law. Members of the public can request a copy of the report by mail or email. A hotline has also been set up. The report will also be posted on the Sheriff's Office website.
