Canon EOS R5 will be the first mirrorless camera with 8K video

Canon isfixing all the thingsthat didn't like , announcing the development of its new full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R5. First, the new camera will be able to shoot video in 8K resolution and downscale it to create 4K video, addressing the strong complaints about the limited 4K video of the $1,800 EOS R.

All of this will be possible thanks to a “new CMOS sensor,” Canon said. This will also lead to higher shooting speeds, allowing you to shoot at 12 fps with the mechanical shutter and 20 fps using the silent electronic shutter. This will “make it easier to capture images at sporting events and other fast-moving spectacles,” Canon said, also referring to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The EOS R5 will include a built-in stabilizer, which will work in conjunction with the lens stabilization, which will once again address what was considered a serious weakness in the first EOS R model. Finally, it will provide dual card slots, likely high-speed, although Canon did not specify what kind.

Finally, Canon said it's working on a total of nine RF lenses for release this year, including 1.4x and 2x telephotos and an RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM that sounds ideal for shooting sports events. It hasn't announced anything about availability or pricing, but Canon will be showing off the EOS R5 for the first time at the CP+ Camera and Photo event in Tokyo from February 27th to March 1st.
