BitTorrent Live: BitTorrent Inc. is known for its torrenting apps, but after being acquired by TRON, it seems to be developing new ideas. Today, the company announced “BitTorrent Live,” a social network platform for streaming.
The new platform will be available as a beta for testing next quarter and will not use BitTorrent technology for streaming videos. At least not from the start.
Many of you know BitTorrent Inc. from the uTorrent and BitTorrent applications, which are already used by 100 million users each month.
The company has tried from time to time to make more applications and services available, but its efforts have not been all that successful.
After the company was acquired by TRON, plans for further development of BitTorrent Inc. did not stop. Now with solid financial support and new developers, the company announced a new product, “BitTorrent Live.” Of course, it hopes that people will queue up…
The “BitTorrent Live” brand name is not new. A similar service was launched to the public in 2013, but stopped working after a while. However, the new BitTorrent Live service promises to be something completely different.
The new platform will function as a social network that users can use to broadcast live content to and from mobile devices, anywhere there is Internet access.
“Imagine talking to your favorite athlete, being at a music festival, or meeting new friends to share your passions – all by simply firing up the BitTorrent Live app,” says Justin Sun, CEO of BitTorrent.
“Using our decentralized technology, we aim to create a borderless internet, but also to pioneer a new content experience,” Sun says.
Streaming apps are nothing new. Many social media platforms already have some kind of streaming feature built in. Of course, according to its creators, BitTorrent Live will be different, with an emphasis on privacy protection while also allowing content creators to earn revenue.
“In the coming months, BitTorrent Live will also integrate blockchain technology that will allow for privacy for users, while also allowing it to be used as a new payment option,” BitTorrent Inc. says.
The company has opened the door for those who want to try out the upcoming beta, but there's nothing to test yet. According to the company, it will be a few weeks before the first invites go out.
