Gmail iOS has a new update that supports the unique display of the 2018 iPad Pro. Working with different screen ratios and sizes is common for Android app developers, but the situation is quite different for iOS developers. With a fixed number of ratios, iOS developers usually get a finite amount of variations and combinations to work with, which allows them to optimize their apps for Apple's devices. However, with the iPad Pro (2018), Apple changed the dimensions of its tablet for the first time, which resulted in a decrease in the quality of the experience offered by third-party apps.
The latest Gmail update for iOS (version 5.0.190113) only shows a note under the What's New section that says "Now optimized for the new Apple iPad Pro." This brings good news for iPad Pro (2018) users who have been waiting for the Gmail app to fit the new dimensions, with thinner bezels and rounded edges.
Note that this is not the same as the new updated version of the Material Design Gmail app.
Gmail is just one of the popular apps that has had to push out an update for the new aspect ratios and resolutions of iOS devices. Just last week, it was reported that Facebook was preparing an update to optimize its app for the iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and iPad Pro (2018). Finally, there was a report that Instagram was also optimizing its app for the new iOS screens.
