Google has released the Android for Pixel users. The update is rolling out to all Pixel models, including the Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, and Pixel C. However, it is not available for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. It addresses a total of 42 issues and resolves vulnerabilities that are rated as serious to critical.
As mentioned in Pixel's briefing, the updated security version for Android does not include features exclusive to Pixel. Google has provided “functional updates and improvements to various parts of the Android platform”.
The Android security bulletin for February reported that the latest updated Android security version has two patch levels dated 01-02-2019 and 05-02-2019, which fix 15 and 27 issues respectively. The vulnerabilities it addresses are considered critical but the most serious problem fixed by the new updated version is related to the media framework, which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted PNG file.
With the new update, Google has also resolved issues related to the media library and kernel components. It also fixes system vulnerabilities and issues related to different Qualcomm.
As reported by 9to5Google, the updated security version for Android moves the «About phone» section and brings it to the main «Settings» menu—right above the «Tips & support» option. Previously, the «About phone» section was available in the «System» menu. There is also a dedicated «Safety & regulatory manual» section.
How to install the updated security version of Android
You can check the availability of the updated security version on your Pixel phone or tablet by going to Settings > System > Advanced > System update. As mentioned earlier, the update is compatible with Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL and Pixel C.
Alternatively, you can use the factory images. It is recommended to back up your data before using the new package, as it will erase your existing data.
Google has also provided the OTA Zip files, which you can download to install the updated security version on your device, via an unlocked bootloader. It is important that devices have the latest Android version to receive the most recent updated security version.
