A team of researchers from the Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography (COSIC) of the Department of Electrical Engineering at KU Leuven University in Belgium has revealed how the encryption used in the wireless fob keys of the Tesla Model S can be broken.
Tesla 's Key Fob Cloning Attack Takes Just 1.6 Seconds!
Like most car systems that do not require the use of a key, the keys of the Tesla Model S operate by sending encrypted code to the car's radio. In this way the doors are activated and unlocked.
But how did they achieve this hack? Essentially, the researchers created a database of all possible keys for any combination of codes and then used the Radio Yard Stick One, Proxmark, and a Raspberry Pi.
With this database and these two codes, the team claims it can calculate the correct cryptographic key to breach any fob key in just 1.6 seconds. To understand it better, we can watch the video that shows the attack in real time.
The group reported the vulnerability to Tesla last year, but the company patched it in June 2018 by upgrading the weak encryption. Last month, the company also added an optional PIN as an additional security measure.
Tesla rewards security researchers with $10,000
After the story ended, Tesla commented on the very significant security flaw on Twitter. It also paid the KU Leuven team $10,000 and chose to add the researchers' names to its company's "Hall of Fame."
