For most of us, when we're getting ready to leave the house for some outside work, the first thing we think about is whether we've taken our keys, cell phone, and wallet with us. However, there's a chance that soon we'll only need our cell phone and wallet.
This is because Apple is likely to introduce a new feature that will allow us to unlock our car and house doors via our iPhone.
According to The Information (h/t Engadget), the NFC (Near Field Communication) chip contained in iPhones, which is responsible for the easy transactions behind features like Apple Pay, is rumored to be expanding its current capabilities into other areas.
“The change to the Near Field Communication, or NFC, chip, expected to be announced next month, could pave the way for people to use their iPhone for other security-related actions, from paying for MMMs and unlocking their car doors to verifying their identity,” the article states, according to MacRumors.
NFC chips can be used in a variety of other ways, including in the healthcare industry.
These findings were discovered in a copy of the upcoming iOS 12 release. Apple has reportedly been working on this issue since 2014, in collaboration with HID Global, a company that specializes in identity security. The new feature is expected to be announced in early June, during the Worldwide Developers Conference 2018 (WWDC).
The conference starts on June 4th, so chances are we won't have to wait long to learn the official details about this latest development.
