German automaker Porsche plans to upgrade all Windows 7 computers to Windows 10, according to a new report, and the process is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
While no official announcement has been made on the matter yet, WindowsArea reports that Porsche wants to complete the deployment of Windows 10 across its entire network before support for Windows 7 ends.
According to Microsoft's schedule, Windows 7 will receive its last batch of updates in January 2020, after which the operating system will be officially considered obsolete and will no longer receive patches for security vulnerabilities.
The source said Porsche wants to upgrade its entire fleet of Windows 7 computers to Windows 10, and it is believed that around 27,000 employees will benefit from the improvements that are part of Microsoft's new operating system. The improved arsenal of security features in Windows 10 is one of the reasons why Porsche is planning a company-wide upgrade.
When a company the size of Porsche decides to upgrade its infrastructure to Windows 10, it's certainly a big win for Microsoft. But the same can't be said for Windows 7, which, on the other hand, is still a huge problem for the software giant.
Data provided by research firm NetMarketShare shows that Windows 7 still runs on at least 40% of desktop computers worldwide, while Windows 10 comes in second with a share of just over 34%.
What's even more impressive is that Windows 7 managed to survive despite the persistent push of Windows 10, which was also offered as a free upgrade. Microsoft has often been criticized for its aggressive tactics to boost share of its latest OS, including forced upgrades.
At this point, Microsoft says it has 200 million corporate Windows 10 users, and the number is likely to grow as we approach the Windows 7 retirement date.
