Windows is still the dominant desktop operating system, but have you ever wondered how easy or difficult it is for Microsoft to stay on top?
For now, it's not too difficult as Windows' market share is increasing, while its biggest rival, macOS, is decreasing.
According to NetMarketShare data for March 2018, Windows remains at the top, reaching 88.80%. This means that Microsoft's platform managed to record a 1.36% increase in just one month. This success is quite significant for the company, which is preparing to release the Spring Creators Update.
On the other hand, Apple's macOS saw a drop from 10.09% to 9.01%. Linux also fell from 2.10% to 1.84%.
Although macOS still has a long way to go before it can be considered a serious threat to Windows, many customers consider Apple's operating system to be a good alternative.
Most worryingly for Microsoft is that Apple's software has started to follow a similar direction to its own.
Microsoft 's main drawback is its lack of a mobile operating system, an area where Apple has been a leader for several years. At the same time, Apple is expanding into the education sector this year with new products such as a more affordable iPad, although in this case it favors iOS over macOS.
For now, Microsoft remains the leader in desktops, and the arrival of a new Windows 10 update will add another stone to its empire. The release of the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update is expected in the first half of April.
