Windows 10 April 2018 Update: Leads to “Desktop Unavailable” errors

Another day with another bug for the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. This time, the upgrade process is affecting several computers and making it impossible to boot to the desktop. In fact, the number of systems affected by the issue has increased significantly in recent days.

While it's still difficult to determine the extent of the bug's spread, one user reports that when he took his computer to a repair shop he was informed that it was the third system in just one day to experience the same problem.

Windows 10

"I was informed that the configuration had completely destroyed the operating system on all three computers that the store had received that day. I installed a new operating system only to lose software that I now have to repurchase," the user explained.

In most cases, the update may appear to have been installed correctly, but upon startup, everything on the desktop ends up with a black screen displaying the following message:

“The location C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop not is available. If the location is on this computer, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disk is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you are connected to the network or the Internet, and try again. If the location cannot be found, it may have been moved or deleted. “

Microsoft to simply reinstall Windows.
