Microsoft has released a preview of Skype for Desktops that appears to be different from the Universal Windows Platform version of Skype for Windows 10.
This is the updated Skype for Desktops app that runs on Windows 7, and Windows8.X. (Those who want to try this preview on Windows 10 can do so by choosing an older version of Windows in compatibility mode. This is the only way supported on Windows 10.)
Microsoft has added some of the features of the new Skype Mobile app to the desktop one with this preview.
The new app, according to the company, “puts conversation front and center,” adds real-time screen and photo sharing. It brings @messages, message reactions, and a new notification panel. It makes available a new chat media gallery for finding shared content, such as links, documents, and media. And it adds better customization to group calls.
The Skype Desktop preview app doesn't yet support call translation, doesn't allow users to send video messages, put their calls on hold, or merge incoming calls with existing ones, but the FAQ page suggests that these features will come later.
The announcement, made on the company's blog on August 17, announces the new Skype Desktop preview, and says that developers are waiting for testers' feedback on the new application.
Microsoft said earlier this year that the company plans to slowly bring the updated Skype Client to iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, the web, and Xbox.
