European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced today that the European Commission will make free Wi-Fi available in public spaces in European Union member states by 2020.
“We propose to equip every European village and every city with free wireless internet access around the main centres of public life from 2020,” said European Union President Jean-Claude Juncker.
As part of the EU initiative to improve Europe's digital infrastructure, there are also plans to provide 5G mobile connectivity for all of Europe from 2025.
Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker further stated that the EU is committed to reviewing its existing copyright laws in order to better protect the works and rights of artists and creators online.
To achieve the above goal (project WiFi4EU), the EU intends to spend 120 million euros in the coming years to equip parks, squares, libraries and other public spaces with free Wi-Fi.
Local authorities will be responsible for any running costs.
