Ten new ways to crash an iPhone with the same bug

While Apple has released a “fix” for the bugthatcauses an iOS device to crash when it receives a specially formatted message with unicode characters, there are still many who are using the same bug to cause problems on devices.

In other words, they use iOS's difficulty reading unicode characters to crash Apple's systems in different ways. iphone bug

The vulnerability lies in how Apple's CoreText library processes Unicode characters in text messages.

Once users learned of the bug, pranks began causing Apple's mobile devices to crash.

Below we will describe some possibilities for exploiting the bug, which, as you will see in the video below, are freely available on the internet.

10 ways to crash iPhones.

Besides simply sending a message (via multiple communication channels) to the targeted device, which will stop working as soon as the notification appears, there are a few other ways to cause problems that won't even appear with notifications on the device.

One method is to change the Wi-Fi network name by adding another one with Unicode characters. The result: iDevice users will no longer be able to access Wi-Fi settings, because the app will crash when it “reads” the wireless connection name.

Of course, once the device leaves the range of the wireless network, access to the settings is regained.

Another nasty prank involves putting Unicode text in the subject line of an email and sending it to iPhone users. The result: the device crashes when the notification appears and the Mail app can no longer be launched.

The video shows different examples, and one of them shows how to crash the Maps app. The prank is easily achieved by creating an Apple Maps URL that contains the familiar characters.

When someone goes to visit the link, the text it contains causes the Maps app to crash.

At number seven on the list of pranks is Safari on iOS. Creating a webpage with Unicode characters will cause Safari to crash because it can't read it.
