Mercedes-Benz: Humanoid robots work at a factory in Germany

For many years, automakers have relied on giant industrial robots to assemble vehicles in their factories. Now, however, some companies are embracing modern technology, integrating advanced humanoid robots into the production process. Mercedes-Benz is one of the automakers that has decided to adopt this technology, starting trials of humanoid robots at a factory in Germany.

The robots used by the company come from Apptronik, an American company founded in 2016 at the Human Centered Robotics Lab at the University of Texas. Mercedes-Benz has invested millions in the company and is now using the Apollo robots at its Berlin factory, integrating them directly into production.

Although concerns about job losses due to automation remain, Mercedes employees appear to be safe (at least for now).
The company had been integrating the robot into its assembly line since last year, on a trial basis.

Apollo humanoid robots are primarily used for logistics and focus on repetitive tasks. For example, they can move components or modules to the production line, where skilled technicians assemble them and install them in vehicles. The robots can also be used to perform initial quality checks on components.

According to the company, employees don’t just stand around the robots controlling them. Employees themselves have been involved in training the Apollo robots via teleoperation and augmented reality. This process has allowed the robots to learn to work autonomously, reducing the need for constant supervision. This allows employees to continue their work and focus on other important tasks that the robot can’t do. If an Apollo robot runs low on power, it can simply recharge, without disturbing anyone.

The humanoid robot Apollo, which works at Mercedes-Benz, is about 1.70 meters tall and weighs 73 kilograms. Since we are talking about a machine, there is no risk of fatigue or injury and it can be used to shortages labor across the industry.

The entry of the humanoid robot Apollo into the Mercedes-Benz workforce comes at a time when the automotive industry is emphasizing automation. With its humanoid design, Apollo has the distinct ability to navigate spaces designed for humans, performing tasks ranging from material handling to precision assembly. This development could herald major changes in the way vehicles are produced around the world.
