Todd Howard, longtime director of massive open-world RPGs like Fallout 4 and the upcoming space adventure Starfield, seems to regret the way Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI, claiming it should have revealed the game more "loosely.".

During E3 2018 — remember when we had actual E3 events? — Bethesda announced Starfield, its next massive open-world RPG. But it also took a moment to reveal The Elder Scrolls VI, the long-awaited sequel to the wildly popular The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Five years later, Starfield is almost here, but the next Elder Scrolls game is nowhere to be found. In a new interview, Howard reveals that he's thought a lot about how and when Bethesda announced the long-awaited RPG. And looking back, he would have done things differently.
Speaking to GQ ahead of Starfield 's release in September, Howard was asked about the future of Bethesda after eight years of working on Starfield. Specifically, the renowned video game director was asked if he regrets announcing the next Elder Scrolls games so early, as it could be another four years before the game actually releases.
"I've wondered that many times. I don't know," Howard admitted. "I probably would have announced it more casually.".
When pressed to reveal anything about the upcoming game, Howard remained tight-lipped, which shows how far away The Elder Scrolls VI is from its 2023 release. (Howard didn't even reveal the game's codename.).
Suggestion: Xbox: 3 future Bethesda games will be console exclusives
"It's like... I don't want to answer, but I want to be polite," Howard said after being asked for details about the upcoming RPG. "I will say that we want this to fill the role of the ultimate fantasy world simulator. And there are a number of ways to achieve that, given the time that has passed.".
Interestingly, Howard had already announced The Elder Scrolls VI back in 2016, two years before the game's official teaser and announcement at E3. In an interview with Geoff Keighley at the time, Howard confirmed that Bethesda was indeed going to make an Elder Scrolls VI, but warned that it was "a long way off." He wasn't kidding!
As for Fallout 5, that's coming, too. Howard confirmed it in a 2022 interview with IGN. But it won't be until after The Elder Scrolls VI. And considering how many years that game is likely to be out at this point, we wouldn't expect the new Fallout until sometime after 2032. At least you can play Starfield soon, when it launches on September 6th for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
