White dwarf observed eating its planet for the first time

Scientists have observed for the first time the final moments of a destroyed planetas it fell into a white dwarf.

Scientists observe for the first time a white dwarf (white dwarf) eating its planet.
Researchers, using X–Rays, they were observing the remnants of a planetary system at the time it was devoured by the star that had rotated earlier.Billions of years after the planetary system formed, its sun died, resulting in the rocks and gases that remained falling into the white dwarf that was created from the dead sun.See also: Astronomers just discovered a very different kind of black hole!It is the first time that the opportunity is given to measure the rocky material at the moment it falls into a white dwarf. Additionally, it confirms the indirect evidence that indicated the same thing, which we have been observing for decades for thousands of stars. Most stars, when they reach the end of their lives, turn into white dwarfs. Of the 300,000 dead stars we have found in our galaxy, many of them have been indirectly observed to “eat” the planets that orbited them. The astronomers They had indirect evidence for this phenomenon, measuring the wavelengths of light to conclude that the material being consumed has characteristics in common with those of planets. However, they have never seen it happen directly until now. More specifically, they report that they saw material entering the star's atmosphere and that this is the first time they can measure an accretion rate that does not rely on detailed models of the white dwarf's atmosphere. Previously, spectrographs and models of white dwarf atmospheres were used for the measurements. These models are numerical models that calculate how quickly an element passes through the atmosphere into the star, and with them we can calculate how much material falls into the atmosphere. With this data we can also determine the original form of the material, whether it is a satellite, a planet, or an asteroid.See also: NASA: Helicopters flying to Mars will start to glow

White dwarfs are formed when a star has consumed all of its energy, shedding its outer layers, something that likely destabilizes the planets around it. Consequently, what it leaves behind is a very small, very dense (in volume) dead star. Subsequently, material from the remaining planets collides with the white dwarf, creating plasma, which is hot due to the shock it endured. As the plasma cools on the surface of the dead star, it emits X-rays.See also: Researchers searched for aliens in 144 exoplanets and billions of starsThese rays can be difficult to observe as they have to compete with much brighter signals in the night sky, however scientists in their new research managed to distinguish these signals from the white dwarf, via the Chandra X-ray observatory. The research is described in an article, «A white dwarf accreting planetary material from X-ray observations», which was published in Nature today.
