Streaming platforms are at the peak of their glory. And now that their number is growing, each of them is doing everything they can to secure a larger audience. Amazon is also making such a move to lock down exclusive content.

According to rumors reported by The Information, Variety and the New York Times, the company is considering spending up to $9 billion to buy Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which comes with a film library that includes franchises such as the James Bond series, The Hobbit, Stargate and Robocop, plus thousands of other blockbusters. MGM also bought full ownership of the Epix channel in 2017.

Last week Amazon announced that a former executive, Jeff Blackburn, would return to the company to oversee businesses including Amazon Studios and Twitch, and the thought is that part of the reason behind the move is the opportunity to manage MGM's library.

This rumor has been circulating since January, according to a Forbes report, though all sides say no deal has been made yet. However, the timing seems right for a new strategy from Amazon, as Netflix partners with Sony Pictures, AT&T sells WarnerMedia, and Disney+ continues to pump out Star Wars/MCU content.
