iPhone: How to take photos in Burst mode

Burst mode is a great way to guarantee you'll capture a photo of any movement — but, as of iOS 14, it's been slightly hidden on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and newer devices. Here's how to use it.

iPhone Burst

Taking photos and videos with QuickTake

QuickTake is a new feature that makes it easier to capture short videos while taking photos on your iPhone. It makes the camera work more like the built-in cameras in apps like Instagram and Snapchat.

To take a short video, hold down the “Shutter” button. When you release it, the recording will stop. If you want to create a longer video, hold down the “Shutter” button and drag it to the lock on the right. This will lock the recording until you press the “Stop Recording” button. You can continue to take photos by pressing the “Shutter” button even while recording.

If you’ve been using an iPhone for a while, you might have noticed that you’ve been “taking bursts.” Now, to take a burst of photos, hold down the “Shutter” button and slide it to the left. Your iPhone will continue shooting until you release it.

You have to slide the shutter quickly enough, pause very quickly, and your iPhone will start recording the video.

Adjust the volume in Burst Mode

The volume buttons on your iPhone double as a “shutter release” and work with QuickTake. Press “Volume Up” or “Volume Down” to take a photo, or hold them down to take a short video.

However, you can configure your iPhone to hold down the “Volume Up” button instead of taking a burst of photos, while “Volume Down” takes video. It’s a great way to have full control over your camera.

To enable it, go to Settings > Camera, and turn on “Use Volume Up For Burst”.

Selecting photos from Burst mode

Not every photo you take in a burst is good. In fact, you might only want to keep one or two. Your iPhone will automatically choose the one it thinks is the best photo, and you just have to agree and delete the ones you don't like.

To sort your photos, open your Camera Roll. Burst mode photos appear as a small stack, though they're hard to see. Tap inside and you'll also see "Burst (X photos)" in the top left.
