Minimal Ubuntu: By default, almost every Linux distribution comes with a ton of extra applications. That might be fine for those who want a system for home or work, but these distributions aren't built for use in servers, containers, and clouds.
That's where Canonical's latest version of Ubuntu is aimed: Minimal Ubuntu.
And when Canonical says Minimal, it means Minimal. The Ubuntu 18.04 Docker is only 29MB. The minimal Ubuntu ISO, which is around 40MB (just the necessary files), is intended for people who want to download packages from Canonical's repositories during installation.
This version may be useful for hobbyists, but the Minimal Ubuntu 18.04 Long Term Support (LTS) also works as an efficient container operating system. It allows developers to develop and launch their applications faster. The minimal Ubuntu image is already used as the standard Docker Hub Ubuntu 18.04 LTS ISO image.
Why?
Because its tiny size allows for faster boot times, better performance, and improved stability for cloud developers and system administrators.
Just because it's small doesn't mean it's not powerful. It's fully functional, and you can add whatever Ubuntu applications you want to it. Minimum Ubuntu is designed to run completely automated operations.
Documentation, locale settings, and other user-facing features of Ubuntu Server have been stripped out. The operating system contains only the essential components of the boot sequence. However, you can manage it remotely, as it has ssh, apt, and snapd.
