On July 10, 2018, at 11:00 Greek time, the Registry of Domain Names (domains) with the .ελ suffix will begin operating.
The registration of a domain name with the .ελ suffix will be possible for any interested party, from the first day of operation of the Registry of Domain Names with the .ελ suffix, as long as the requested .ελ domain name is not identical or homograph with an already assigned domain name with the .gr suffix.
More specifically, for the protection of holders of already assigned domain names (domains) with the .gr ending who wish to register the corresponding domain names with the .ελ ending, there will be a period of three (3) months from the start of operation of the .ελ Domain Name Registry during which the following restrictions will apply:
– Domain Names with the .ελ ending whose variable field is exactly the same or homograph with the variable field of already assigned second-level Domain Names with the .gr ending are assigned only to the Registrant/Holder of the corresponding second-level Domain Name with the .gr ending.
– names with the suffix .ελ whose variable field is exactly the same or identical to the variable field of already assigned third-level Domain Names with the suffix .gr where the second level is non-variable and provided that there is no assigned second-level domain name with the suffix .gr with the exact same or identical variable field, are assigned to the Registrant/Organizer of the corresponding third-level Domain Name with the suffix .gr that first submits a registration statement.
– In the event that there are assigned identical second-level Domain Names with the suffix .gr to different Organizations, then the corresponding Domain Names with the suffix .ελ are not assigned.
After the end of the quarter and specifically on 10-10-2018 at 11:00, the above restrictions will cease to apply and any domain name with the .ελ ending will be available for registration for anyone interested.

We seriously cannot find any reason for the availability of the new domains, except perhaps for the financial profit that the domain providers will make. .ελ is primarily aimed at the Greek market, as keyboards in other countries will not allow the registration of the new extension.
The reasoning behind this release of the new extension is perhaps to force all owners of names with the .gr extension to obtain the corresponding name in .ελ….
