Blueborne: Lenovo releases updates for its tablets after 9 months

Nine months after researchers were alerted to the Blueborne bug, Lenovo has released a patch for three popular series of its Android tablets.

Lenovo, the world's third-largest tablet manufacturer, said the patches are available for download via its site, and are available for 4 Lenovo Tabs, 14 Tab essentials and 3 Yoga tabs.

"The updates should be applied immediately," Lenovo said in the release notes, as the vulnerabilities caused by BlueBorne are critical and high priority.

“We finished the updates for our laptops some time ago, and with this release, the BlueBorne cycle is completely closed.” The company said it is unusual for it to delay security patch updates this long, and added that there is a reason why some models are updated while others are not.

In September 2017, along with the discovery of BlueBorne, vulnerabilities were announced that affected billions of devices on Android and Apple devices. It affected smartphones, tablets, printers, smart TVs and IoT devices that used the Bluetooth protocol. The vulnerabilities allowed an attacker to take full control of a device, distribute malware, or perform a man-in-the-middle attack to gain access to critical data.

At that time, an estimated 5.3 billion devices were exposed to this type of attack, with 2.1 billion of them being Android devices. Only 900,000 of these had software updates available in a short period of time to fix the vulnerability.

The list of tablets for which Lenovo has released updates is as follows: TB3-X70F, TB3-X70I, TB3-X70L, TB3-X70N, TB-7304F, TB-7304I, TB-7304X, TB-7504F, TB-7504X TB-8704V, TB-8704X, TB-X304F, TB-X304L, TB-X304N, TB-X704A, TB-X704F, TB-X704L, TB-X704V, YT-X703F, YT-X703L and YT-X703X.
