Intel's low-power display increases battery life

IntelOne of the most interesting announcements made at Computex 2018 was that of Intel, which has to do with battery life in computers.

The display is the biggest battery drainer on a computer. That's why Intel now claims that its new Low Power Display technology can cut LCD power consumption in half. To do so, the company is working with Sharp and Innolux. The two manufacturers are developing 1-watt display panels.

What are the results? Intel says its low-power display could provide about 4 to 8 hours of additional battery life when watching videos. On some devices, the total battery life can reach up to 28 hours. The company is referring to testing it did on a Windows 10 device running a Core i7-855U with 8GB of RAM, an Intel 600p SSD, and Intel UHD Graphics 620.

This translates to 3 hours more than what is said to be the case with the recently announced Snapdragon 850 SoC designed for Windows 10 on Arm.

The company demonstrated its technology on a Dell XPS 13 with a low-power display. It goes without saying that this display feature will be available on upcoming devices. It will also require the device to be running Intel graphics.

These energy-efficient displays could be part of the company's efforts to maintain its market share. It may not happen in the coming days, but Arm-powered computers could certainly pose a potential threat to Intel's dominance, as the company has already lost the battle in the smartphone arena.
