Microsoft brings Ubuntu Linux to Windows 10 ARM

LinuxTwo years ago, Microsoft revealed its plans to add a new Windows subsystem that would allow Linux to run on Windows 10. This feature was met with great enthusiasm by developers, who wanted the best of both operating systems. A year later, the company also added the option to install Linux distros on WSL directly from the Windows Store.

At the 2018 Developer Conference, Redmond also announced that Windows 10 ARM WSL is also getting support for Linux distributions like Ubuntu (Via: Neowin). However, even after the new and upcoming changes, x86 devices will still not be supported.

Until now, the Ubuntu app in the Windows Store was only functional on x64 devices, while it did not work on ARM .

The company also showed a working demo of the Ubuntu desktop environment running on a Windows 10 ARM PC.

There is currently no official release date for this feature, but it could be released at any time. When that happens, we will be able to download Ubuntu on our Windows 10 ARM computer. Over time, other Linux distributions are expected.

To promote Windows 10 ARM more effectively, Microsoft has also released an early preview of the 64-bit ARM SDK for Windows. It will allow developers to build their own 64-bit ARM applications that will run natively on ARM devices.
