CCleaner 5.36: Piriform released a new version of its popular Windows cleaning software yesterday.
The new version brings two important changes, namely a new emergency update feature and new default cleaning rules for some Windows applications.
CCleaner 5.36 is available for download from the company's official website and comes as an updated version for CCleaner Professional users.
Those using the free version can download the portable version from the page which comes without adware.
Emergency Updater is a new feature of CCleaner that comes with its own executable file CCUpdate.exe and a new scheduled task called CCleaner Updater.
The integration of Emergency Updater into the updated application is likely a response to the recent hack of the company's infrastructure. The attackers managed to install malicious code in CCleaner, which was distributed for about a month through the company's official website.
Piriform released a new version of the program with a new digital signature, but was unable to distribute it to users of the free application due to the lack of an automatic update feature.
Piriform, which has been owned by Avast since 2017, used Avast's emergency update feature as a model for developing CCleaner Emergency Updater.
CCleaner's default cleaning rules are also changing.
The second major change in the new version 5.36 changes some of the default cleaning rules. The default rules are those that are set when the program is run for the first time.
Probably the biggest change is that the updated app will no longer delete browsing session data by default. The change affects Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Opera, Safari, and Thunderbird.
Version 5.36 will no longer clean Windows Defender scan history, Microsoft Office MRUs, most recently used documents, and other Windows Explorer MRU files.
