Programmer and designer Matthew Zamora took to Kickstarter this week to launch his new FPGA breakout board for beginners, called Fipsy. Available via Kickstarter with donations starting at just $10 or £7, the board offers an affordable FPGA that would normally cost around $60. Designed specifically for beginners, FPGAs, or Field Programmable Gate Arrays, allow a designer to program logic circuits at the hardware level, at a more affordable price point.
Using this method can significantly speed up prototyping or enable massively parallel operations, Matthew explains. FGPAs are described as a system designer's magic black bag, in that they can be dynamically reconfigured to do any arbitrary type of digital processing.
Features of the Fipsy FPGA board include a very low price point for an entry-level FPGA board, great for rapid prototyping, breadboard compatible design, uses only free or open source design tools, and is supported by many examples and guides from a DIY community.
