It was only last month that Samsung released the world's largest capacity SSD PM1643 at 30TB. Just a month later, that mark has been broken by Nimbus Data.
The storage company has announced its new 3D NAND Flash SSD card with a capacity of 100TB. In other words, it's a digital storage device that can store 200 million songs, 20,000 HD movies, or 2,000 iPhones.
Nimbus says the DC100 uses about 85% less power per TB than comparable SSDs and offers a 42% reduction in cost of ownership per TB. It's designed with a focus on capacity and efficiency rather than speed. This is an important factor for enterprise storage devices, as no company can afford to lose the vast amounts of data it processes. Still, it can offer read and write speeds of 500MB/sec.
All this storage comes in the standard 3.5-inch form factor and a single DC100 rackmount. The SSD can scale storage to 100 petabytes in data centers.
Nimbus said the ExaDrive DC100 SSD, along with a lower-capacity 50TB model, will be available this summer. For now, they've sent sample units to potential customers. Its pricing will be similar to existing TB-based SSDs. So, we don't expect it to be very affordable.
While massive storage solutions like this aren't meant for everyday consumers, they certainly give us a glimpse into the future. The increasing capacity of data centers would help store data on our devices less frequently.
