Apple releases AT&T carrier update for iPhone 18 Pro Max in iOS 27.2 beta

After releasing a carrier settings update last week to address cellular issues affecting some iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T, Apple is now releasing a different carrier package update for devices running the iOS 27.2. The move comes in response to reports that surfaced in late September, when users reported that their devices suddenly lost access to calls, messages, and cellular data, instead displaying “SOS” in the status bar.

Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T were experiencing an issue that could cause them to lose cellular service and be unable to make calls. This issue, it turns out, only affected the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which uses a Qualcomm modem in the United States. In contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro, which uses Apple's C2 modem, was not affected, suggesting that the issue may be related to the specific modem hardware.

Apple's carrier settings update released last week was intended to prevent the issue from affecting additional devices. That update brought AT&T users to iOS 27.0, version 72.1. However, iPhones that had already lost service would require a hardware replacement, suggesting the issue couldn't be fixed through software alone.

Tonight, as spotted by Aaron Perris on X, Apple has begun rolling out another carrier package update for iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T, this time specifically for devices running the iOS 27.2 beta. This new update, version 72.0.3, upgrades devices from the previous version 72.0.2, likely extending Apple’s AT&T carrier changes to users testing the iOS 27.2 beta.

Carrier updates are an important tool used to tweak cellular settings on devices, allowing manufacturers to fix issues related to connectivity and compatibility with carrier networks. In this case, Apple's carrier update appears to be an urgent effort to restore normalcy to affected devices, especially for those testing the new features of iOS 27.2 beta.

This situation highlights the importance of constantly monitoring and updating provider settings, especially when new software or hardware versions are introduced to the market. Users affected by such problems often face serious difficulties in their daily communication, which can affect their personal and professional lives.

Additionally, the need for hardware replacement in some cases highlights the importance of collaboration between device manufacturers and mobile service providers. Solving such issues often requires combined efforts to ensure smooth operation of devices and user satisfaction.

Apple, by releasing this update, demonstrates its commitment to providing immediate solutions to issues affecting its users, while continuing to test and improve new versions of its software. The speed with which the carrier update was released indicates the priority the company places on resolving issues affecting the user experience.
