Tim Cook says: "I'm not interfering" in the affairs of the new John Ternus

Tim Cook, one of the most recognizable leaders in technology, stepped down as CEO Apple in September, handing the reins to former hardware chief John Ternus. The move marks a major shift for Apple, a company that has shaped the course of technology in recent years. Cook, however, is not completely stepping away from the company, as he takes on the role of executive chairman, while remaining a prominent face of Apple.

The transition was not sudden. According to Cook, the process had been underway for years, with the goal of ensuring a smooth leadership transition. In an interview with The Independent, Cook expressed his desire to make the transition “the best transition ever, an example that people could look back on and learn from.” He noted that everything went as he had envisioned.

John Ternus, the new CEO, is no stranger to Apple. As head of the hardware division, he has already had a significant influence on the development of market-defining products like the iPhone and iPad. His first major move as CEO was the introduction of the iPhone Duo, a product that is expected to bring new innovations to the smartphone market. The move shows Ternus' intention to continue Apple's tradition of innovation, while also putting his own stamp on the company.

Tim Cook, for his part, has taken on a more strategic role, focusing on global politics and interacting with governments. As he said in his interview, “interacting with governments around the world is important because there are a lot of issues where we’re trying to promote or advocate for change.” Cook’s experience in this area is invaluable to Apple as the company faces challenges related to technology regulation and privacy.

Tim Cook and John Ternus: A relationship built on trust

The relationship between Cook and Ternus appears to be particularly strong, based on trust and open communication. Cook said he doesn't interfere with Ternus' work, allowing it to make its own decisions and chart its own course. "The relationship has to be based on trust, and the communication has to be frequent and meaningful," Cook said. This approach reflects his own experience when he took over as CEO from Steve Jobs, noting that he didn't try to emulate his predecessor.

Specifically, he said: “I am currently focusing on global politics. Interaction with governments around the world is important, as there are many issues on which we seek to promote change or support reform. This is a task that requires considerable effort; I am engaged in this and at the same time assist John in any way he deems appropriate. I do not interfere in foreign fields. I am not a person who interferes where he is not invited.”

Cook advised Ternus: “Make the work your own. Spend your time in areas where you can bring the most value to the company. And that means you shouldn’t imitate me. Just like I didn’t imitate Steve. We each have our own strengths.”
