Microsoft, as we mentioned in an earlier post, has started offering native support for Ubuntu through its Windows 10 operating system.
Today the company seems to have gone one step further:
As promised, starting today you can download Ubuntu directly from the Windows Store. Installing an entire operating system has become as easy as downloading an app from the company's Store.
But "easy" is relative.
The feature is currently only available to users participating in the Windows Insider Program. You will also need to enable the Windows Subsystem for Linux in advance.
Those interested should know that this is the Ubuntu command line and is not intended for running graphical applications.
So using the distribution through the Windows platform is mainly intended for programmers and system administrators. Of course there is always the solution of adding a GUI which will run but with several problems.
Adding the popular distribution to the Windows Store doesn't make things much easier, but it does save a couple of keystrokes at the command line.
