America is ready to ban the transport of laptops on flights to the US from the United Kingdom and Europe, Homeland Security officials said today.
Yesterday, European security officials told The Daily Beast that the US will require all laptops and other similar devices to be secured in checked baggage and placed in the overhead compartment on flights from the UK and Europe.
The ban could be announced as soon as Thursday. US officials did not confirm the report, but said: “It is under review.”
In March, laptops were banned from flights from 10 airports in eight Middle Eastern countries to the US after authorities claimed they had evidence of terrorists blowing up planes using laptops laced with explosives.
If the ban goes into effect, it will be a devastating blow to airlines. Not only will economy class passengers be unhappy, but there are also first class passengers who pay because they need to find a fancy seat on an airline so they can work during the flight. Airlines are promoting exactly this and have installed everything necessary for this very purpose.
But here we should mention that if bombs can be integrated into laptops, then even placing them in the luggage compartment would be very dangerous..
So while we await the final decision on the ban, it seems that the US, looking at security, is preparing to make our lives much more difficult...
"No final decisions have been made to extend the restriction on large electronic devices in aircraft cabins, however, it is being considered," he told the US Department of Homeland Security.
"DHS continues to assess the threat environment and will make changes when necessary to keep travelers safe in the air.".
