Three months ago, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg assured the social network's investors that the site was not having a problem signing up new people.
“There’s been a lot of speculation that fewer teens are using Facebook,” he said in July. “Based on our data, that’s simply not true.”
During the company’s earnings call yesterday, Facebook made a surprising admission: Teens are using the site much less.
Teen usage of the site was steady between the second and third quarters of this year, Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman said. But Facebook experienced a “decline in daily users from the teen group.” It’s the first time the social network has acknowledged that this has happened, the Huffington Post reports.
Despite the weaker interest in the social network from teens, Facebook’s profits were very high. So high that they exceeded the expectations of the company’s analysts. The company reported a profit of $2 billion. Almost half of that amount came from mobile advertising.
