Recently, we had published about giraffes that appeared on Facebook. The cute four-legged animal will probably not be the only strange thing you will see on the popular social networking site. A new fashion has been observed recently and we will probably soon see it in Greece, if you haven't seen it already. A kind of computer-generated comic has started appearing on the timelines of Facebook members. No, it is not a virus or a malicious prank, although sometimes it can become quite annoying as we will see below.
It's all thanks to an app called Bitstrips.
Launched earlier this year, Bitstrips has already become one of the most downloaded apps for Android. Last week, it hit number 1 on the iPhone App Store. The animations it creates have proven so popular that the app has been sporadically crashing due to unexpected traffic. As of Wednesday morning, the company's servers were so overloaded that its website was inaccessible.
“We are overwhelmed by the overwhelming response and are currently working feverishly to get everything up and running,” Bitstrips CEO Jacob Blackstock told the Huffington Post in an email.
The reason behind the rise of comics on Facebook may be an app update made in October that lets amateur cartoonists share their comics more easily on the social network. The Bitstrips app has over 10 million monthly users, according to Facebook.
What exactly does the Bitstrips app do? The app lets you make an avatar of yourself into comics. You can do the same with your friends' avatars.
Once you create your Bitstrips, you are given three options: You can make a “status comic” that shows your mood or what you are doing. You can also make a “friend comic,” where you can put your avatar together with the avatar of a friend. Finally, you can create a “greeting card” for any occasion.
