Researchers from Rice University's Laboratory for Nanophotonics (LANP) have presented a solar-powered sterilization system that could be useful for the more than 2.5 billion people who lack adequate sanitation facilities.
The LANP “solar steam” is a sterilization system that converts 80% of the energy in sunlight into heat that kills germs. The new project could be used as a stand-alone sterilization system. On July 8, in a study presented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, LANP researchers showed that they could use the technology to sterilize human waste.
This particular application of the system could improve public health in areas that lack reliable electricity.
