User feedback and usage data are key to improving any application or program – and that's no different for Firefox. As is well known, the popular browser collects all kinds of information and data from users, mainly related to browser usage, customizations, and the hardware on which their browser runs.
But what most users don't know is that when Firefox is first installed, the program collects information about their system, without being particularly...obvious.
Below you will see how you can stop Firefox from collecting information about the new installation.
When you download the Firefox installation file, you're not asked many questions. There's an "Install" button that prompts you to proceed with the installation, an "Options" button that few users click, and a button to cancel the installation.
But let's see what settings are hidden under the "Options" button. Click on it and you'll see a small list of options for the installation, such as adding Firefox startup shortcuts and choosing the installation folder. Here you'll also find the option to "Send Information about this installation to Mozilla." Simply uncheck it and then proceed with the installation as normal.
To be clear, this does not make Mozilla an “evil” company that steals your private data to sell to “Big Brother” for profit. The information gathered at this stage likely shows Mozilla how users prefer to access the browser and what kind of hardware they use.
Although this option does not pose any significant risk, users certainly have the right to know in advance that their data is being collected, so that they have the option to consciously choose whether it is something they want or not.
